As our eye gradually moves up to the top of the painting the sky grows increasingly darker in value. Notice how the sky color and tonal value changes as we move from the horizon line to the top of the painting.Īt the horizon line we can see a small bit of light. ![]() However, he does not just make a dark sky color and then fill it in with bright white dots. Millet uses value in such a way so that the painted stars do light up in the sky. The artist created a lot of soft edges which help to make the bushes and trees that are silhouetted against the sky to feel like they are further off in the distance.Īs well, like the other paintings already mentioned. This piece has a wonderful atmospheric quality to it. Looking at the Starry Night soft edges and varying tonal values It is one of his few paintings that is exclusively a landscape. Millet painted this night sky painting shortly after moving to Barbizon – an artist colony south of Paris. Fun to think of what paintings inspired some of the most famous creations! His admiration of Millet’s work is well known. He would have been able to view it in Paris between 1873 – 1875. Van Gogh may very well have been influenced by this painting by Jean Francois Millet when he created his own Starry Night painting. If you have bright colors in other areas of your painting – that will detract from your starry sky. You must make sure that you are leading viewers eyes to the bright stars in the sky. Rather, how to paint a night sky is also about balancing muted and saturated colors. Painting a night sky isn’t always just about being able to balance dark values and creating bright areas for stars to shine. Because when a bright saturated color is placed in the middle of muted colors it will inevitably stand out. Every other area of the painting is made up of more muted colors– which helps for the meteor to stand out even more. In addition to the meteor being the brightest part of the night sky painting, it is also made up of the most saturated colors. Everything else in the painting would be darker so that there would be no ‘competition’ of focus. He made sure that the brightest part of the painting would be the meteor itself. This painting is able to make that meteor crossing the sky look so bright and brilliant all because of how he used value and muted colors. Walt Whitman even wrote a few words about the event in his poem year of meteors 1859 -1860 ‘ “… strange huge meteor procession, dazzling and clear, shooting over our heads”. What he saw was a ‘spectacular string of fireball meteors cross the Catskill evening sky, an extremely rare earth grazing meteor procession ( )’. The American landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church (of the Hudson River School) painted what he saw in the sky in 1860. While also bringing in light values to the areas of the painting where the stars or moon are painted in.įrederic Edwin Church – The Meteor of 1860 Frederick Edwin Church, The Meteor of 1860 One important thing we learn from this painting, is that one must work with dark values a lot when learning how to paint a night sky. The viewer is able to see the figures in the landscape because they are lit up in the foreground and are much brighter in contrast to the dark landscape. In addition, we can see the bright stars that are in the dark areas of the sky away from the moon. As a result, the light from the moon creates a glow in the night sky painting. Although the sky is also dark, the landscape is even darker. In the painting, the landscape and trees are very dark in value. The night sky in this painting feels like a natural night sky because the artist balanced the values in the painting so that we could feel the darkness of the sky. This painting depicts Joseph, Mary and Jesus seeking refuge from possible persecution by Herod. ![]() This oil on copper painting by Adam Elsheimer is thought to be the very first rendering of the night sky in Renaissance art. ![]()

![]() ![]() As a statement of fact: Newton's future availability was unreliable in a scenario where he wasn't doing all he could to control it. He missed valuable practice time last week and, if he continued to be unvaccinated, there's a more likely chance than those vaccinated that he would miss time again in the future. Newton lost the job after starting all three exhibitions. ![]() ![]() We're seeing it now with Colts quarterback Carson Wentz being sidelined as a close contact just as he was facing a major week in his return to action, and we saw it last week with Newton. On top of that, the NFL-NFLPA joint policies make it clear that there's a competitive disadvantage if a player is unvaccinated. I would say that has not been substantiated based on what's happened in training camp this year."īut as someone who got the COVID-19 vaccine as quickly as possible and who is pro-vaccine, it's hard for me to divorce my personal beliefs here. Your implication that vaccination solves every problem is just not really. "We've had minimal, but throughout the league there have been quite a high number, I would say, of players who have had the virus who have been vaccinated. "No, we have other players on the team who aren't vaccinated as I would say probably every other team in the league," the coach said. Instead, someone somewhere screwed up, and he missed time he didn't have to miss.Īgain, Belichick said that played no factor in the decision to release Newton. Had he been vaccinated at the time, Newton would have only had to test once every 14 days and would have been free to travel to any sort of appointment anywhere without having to worry about the daily testing cadence. He took a team-approved medical trip and there was some sort of mix-up - did the Patriots not know the rules? Were they miscommunicated to Newton? Did Newton, and Newton alone, screw up? - and he had to sit out of three practices in five days during a quarterback battle because of the league's protocols regarding unvaccinated players. The league found the incidence rate among the unvaccinated population was seven times higher than that of the vaccinated population (2.2% positivity rate among unvaccinated versus 0.3% among vaccinated).īut that wasn't exactly the point with Newton, who as an unvaccinated player had to be tested daily at an NFL facility. ![]() League-wide vaccine rates steadily increased over that time period, but it's safe to say that between 85 to 92 percent of the league was vaccinated at any point during that three-week window. 1-21, 68 players and staff members tested positive for COVID-19 out of 7,190 individuals. So I wouldn't lose sight of that."įrom Aug. The number of players and coaches and coach staff members that have been infected by COVID in this training camp who have been vaccinated, it's a pretty high number. You guys can look it up, you have the access to a lot of information. "I mean look, you guys keep talking about that," Belichick said, "and I would just point out that I don't know what the number is. So when asked flatly if Newton's unvaccinated status played a role in cutting him Tuesday, Belichick said, "No." And before hearing the next question, he took it a step further. ![]() ![]() ![]() But ultimately I believe Neo’s strength and belief in the future-in the face of a terrifying reality-can, and should, be called heroic.Country music, at least in the last few decades, has focused on transforming the mundane into something profound. I’ve become almost hypercritical of LGBT novels that focus on the pain of being gay or have unhappy endings, and the triggers this book contains are numerous and heavy. Kaleidoscope Song is by no means a perfect book. But rest assured, it’s worth slogging through all the pain for. To tell you exactly how Neo stages her recovery would be to spoil the book’s incredibly triumphant end-a conclusion so brave and hopeful that it cemented this as one of my favorite novels of 2017. Rather, he presents us with these terrible realities and has her rise up against them yet again. It’s why the horrific act of violence, toward the end of the book, packs such a terrifying punch: neither Neo, nor many of us in the audience, could ever have imagined this happening.Īnd while Benwell bravely tackles the issue of corrective rape-an issue which, according to a 2015 article in the Telegraph, is still pervasive in South Africa, with hate crimes based on sexual orientation not recognized by South African law-he does not simply leave his heroine there to flounder as a tragic story or a cautionary tale. The rest of the band becomes frustrated with her lack of caution and her failure to comprehend their warnings, but a reader like me-who’s never had to fear for her life simply for being LGBT-can’t really understand it either. Those of us who have grown up in relatively LGBT-safe communities will surely identify with Neo: she longs to hold her girlfriend’s hand in public, is overjoyed by her very first Pride march, and takes a public stand for LGBT rights on her radio show. It’s Neo’s hopeful naïveté, juxtaposed with the hardened, fearful attitudes of Tale and her LGBT+ bandmates, that creates the starkest portrait of what it’s really like to be LGBT+ in this South African community. The story slowly, tantalizingly leads you to the fact that this infatuation isn’t merely one of musical admiration: Neo is in love with Tale, and as she interacts more and more with Tale and the members of her band, it becomes clear that, while her feelings are reciprocated, she is entering into a larger and vastly more dangerous world-one that she does not fully comprehend. Neo’s love for music eventually compels her to sneak out to a bar where Umzi Radio will broadcast live, and propels her into the lives of a band called Tale and the Storytellers, whose music moves her deeply, and whose lead singer, Tale, she immediately becomes infatuated with. Her relationship to music, as both entertainment and escape, is deeply felt in every part of her life. Benwell uses lovely, poetic language to describe how deeply music entwines with the mundanities of Neo’s life: her boredom doing chores at her mother’s salon, her complicated relationship with her best friend, and her frustration that her parents do not see her music dreams as realistic. ![]() The book lures you in with a familiar-feeling story of a young girl-fifteen-year-old Neo-whose dreams are ill-matched to her parents’ expectations: Neo is obsessed with music, and longs to one day work for Umzi Radio, the local station that broadcasts to her hometown of Kayelitsha. Kaleidoscope Song is set in modern-day South Africa-the “rainbow nation” of post-apartheid that, we gradually discover, still suffers from forms of prejudice that manifest themselves in terrifying ways. And in Fox Benwell’s novel Kaleidoscope Song, we see a protagonist who, in the face of horrific violence and prejudice, quietly rebels against the status quo to try to make life better for herself and others like her. ![]() The three young Aboriginal girls in Rabbit-Proof Fence flee on foot from the government that stole them from their mothers. Half the Sky is full of women who struggle up from a world literally designed to put them down. But the reason these stories leave such an impression, I suspect, is that the more horrible the struggle, the more heroic are those who overcome it. Of course, these things are as inexplicable as they are cruel. I remember after watching the latter, I called my mother in a helpless rage-I suppose because, in some childish way, I expected her to somehow make sense of the terrible things human beings do to one another. Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s book Half the Sky comes to mind as an example the 2002 film Rabbit-Proof Fence is another.
